Sacha McNeil gives birth to a girl

Sunrise and 3 News presenter Sacha McNeil has given birth to a baby girl this afternoon.

The new baby has been named Isla and was 6 pound 10.

Congratulations to Sacha and family!

TV3's Nightline is number one late news

The latest audience share figures show that TV3's Nightline has become the number one late night news show by beating rival Tonight in the total share amount.

Nightline received a 22% share in the 5+ results for June, and TVNZ's Tonight received a 21.5% share. These results reflect the overall television audience.

"This is an outstanding result for Nightline, and is a credit to a production team which understands the ideal mix of stories for a late night news programme," said TV3 Director of News and Current Affairs, Mark Jennings.

"Although it's a great result to win the 5+ audience, key demographics mean more to us such as our target 18-49 year old audience where Nightline dominates even further with a 48% margin - 24% compared to Tonight's 16.2%."

Nightline also won in TV One's own target demographic audience of 25-54 year-olds. Nightline received a 23.7% share of this audience while Tonight only managed a 19% share.

Ingrid Hipkiss joins the Sunrise team

From Monday July 6, Ingrid Hipkiss will officially join the Sunrise team as the news presenter, replacing Sacha McNeil who goes on maternity leave this Friday.

Ingrid Hipkiss was a 3 News political reporter until 2007 when she left to have a baby of her own. She has also been a back-up presenter for Sunrise, 3 News, and Nightline in recent weeks.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge of presenting with the Sunrise team," says Hipkiss. "I've always been a fan of the show - it's great to start the day with a mix of information and entertainment, and it'll be fun being part of the team making it happen."

Hipkiss will also replace Sacha McNeil as the presenter of 3 News at 12.

3 News reporter returns to NZ after being deported from Fiji

3 News political reporter Sia Aston has returned to New Zealand after being deported from Fiji by the military-led government.

Aston and cameraman Matt Smith were detained in a room by the military for five hours and had all of their footage confiscated after officials were not happy with their news reports.

"They wanted nothing but positive stories about the regime, the interim government. Anything outside that is just not allowed," said Aston.

The pair were guarded overnight by police and soldiers before being escorted to the airport and banned from the pacific country indefinitely.

ABC Australia's Sean Dorney was also deported from Fiji at the same time as the 3 News crew.

TVNZ's Barbara Dreaver was thrown out of Fiji in December last year.

3 News to add Tauranga to metropolitan weather first

The Bay of Plenty Times has reported that 3 News is set to beat TVNZ by adding Tauranga as a main centre on their weather forecast from tonight.

TV3 Director of News & Current Affairs Mark Jennings says that the plan to add Tauranga to their weather bulletin was not prompted by TVNZ's plans to do so and revealed they have been making preparations for weeks.

"Since the news came out that Tauranga had passed the 116,000 mark, for me that was a bit of breaking story," said Jennings.

Tonight's weather on 3 News will be presented by Mike Hall from Mauao at Mount Maunganui and feature an interview with Tourism Bay of Plenty's general manager Tim Burgess.

TV3 also plans to install a $5,000 weather camera in the city of Tauranga.
